If It’s Easy, I Don’t Want It.

If it’s easy, we don’t trust it. If it’s hard, we assume it must be worth more.

That’s roughly the pattern behind some of my worst decisions at least.

People tend to romanticise what’s just out of reach: the role that’s still a maybe, the city not yet moved to, the project that hasn’t said yes.

By contrast, options that arrive quickly and cleanly can feel suspicious – almost like they were “too easy” to be valuable.

You see this clearly around job offers, for instance.

Someone can receive a solid offer from a respected organisation, with fair compensation and relevant work, and still feel uneasy about accepting it.

The unease often has less to do with the role itself and more to do with how little friction there was in getting it.

Underneath, a few patterns are usually at play:

  • Equating difficulty with value. If something required multiple interview rounds, long case studies or visible sacrifice, it feels earned and therefore “worth it.” Easier wins feel discounted.
  • Treating uncertainty as glamour. The as‑yet‑unconfirmed opportunity can feel more exciting than a confirmed offer, simply because the story around it is still open.
  • Confusing struggle with ambition. There’s a subtle belief that a “truly ambitious” path must look hard from the outside, otherwise it doesn’t count.

The risk is obvious: good, aligned options get rejected because they don’t match an internal picture of how hard they should have been to secure.

People hold out for a hypothetical “better” opportunity, only to watch the concrete one expire.

I believe a more useful way to look at decisions like this is brutally simple:

  • Does this move things forward on what actually matters: skills, environment, money, direction?
  • If I say no, what am I realistically waiting for, and how likely is it to appear in the near future?
  • Am I evaluating the fit of the opportunity, or just the drama level of the story?

Sometimes the smartest move is the one that arrives quietly, makes sense on paper and lets you step out of limbo. An option doesn’t become more meaningful because it was harder to obtain.

Wanting challenge is healthy; needing everything to be a struggle is not.

The work is noticing when “this feels too easy” is just another way of saying “this doesn’t match the narrative in my head”.

So, let’s decide based on fit, not friction.
